Malpaís Costa Rica

A small coastal town, Malpais is located at the southeastern tip of the Nicoya Peninsula in the northern part of Puntarenas. With rocky coves and seductive surfing opportunities day and night, this beach town offers a surfer's paradise. It extends for approximately 6 kilometers of coastline, from Playa Carmen to the Cabo Blanco Nature Reserve. Most people refer to the entire Playa Carmen and Santa Teresa area as Malpaís, so keep that in mind when looking for top-notch surfing and bird watching. Malpais is quieter and less developed than its Santa Teresa counterpart. Many Spanish speakers wonder about the origin of its name, which translates to "Malpaís". Rest assured, Malpais is the opposite of something bad. It owes its name to the summer season, during which the rivers and streams that flow into the region dry up, making it a land evil for the first inhabitants, Malpais has retained its serene atmosphere, even as nearby villages have become more commercial. If you are interested in avoiding the big crowds, this is the perfect place for a getaway.
